Phoenix Photography | 85mm prime

I got a new lens. New gear is always so much fun, even if I’m just trying it out in my own backyard. It almost feels like a first date. I build up this anticipation in my mind hoping it is going to be everything I imagine. Once I get out and start shooting, I’m anxious as I try to get the feel of the lens. Afterward it is rehashed as I go through the images in post-production, much like a phone call to your best girlfriend after a date. For the most part, my lenses have made the cut. And thus far, I’m pretty sure my most recent purchase will too. So I introduce you to the product of my newest lens, my 85mm prime, as we captured the afternoon odds and ends in the backyard. Nothing fancy–just playing around–but I like it.

Phoenix Photography | AZ Professional Photographers Association

This past weekend I attended the Arizona Professional Photographers Association annual conference. My goodness, I had a great time. The first night was a workshop session covering some aspects of portraiture, lighting, and digital dark room techniques (a.k.a post-production). I was super excited to watch other pros at work with lighting. I love light. Some photographers talk about available light. Some photographers make their own light. And some find a balance somewhere in between. Thus far, I’m sort of an in-between kind of girl. But I’m fascinated by how controlling and changing the light can totally change an image of an identical subject. It doesn’t really matter what it is. It is just fun to play with light. Look what it can do to a birthday cake on the kitchen table at my godson’s 3rd birthday party.

Anyway, back to the conference, Friday night’s session was lead by father and son team David B. Watt and Brian Watt.  I was really excited about the lighting portion.  I have to be honest, I learned a ton during that session–except, it had nothing to do with the light.  I was chosen to model for the lighting demo.  Gah!

At first I was actually really disappointed.  I was so looking forward to watching other pros at work with the light.  If I’m in the image, how do I see what the light is doing to me while they move it around me.  But see, that’s the beauty of it.  I didn’t really need to learn that.  I can move lights around on my own and see what they do.  What I needed to learn was how all those lights both close-in and far-off made me feel as the subject of the image.  I got to be in your shoes.  And let’s face it, I’m not in many pictures since I’m usually taking them.  What a huge lesson it was to feel literal spotlights on me and how awkward it can be.  It is easy to forget when I become obsessed with the light that other people might not see why it is so important.  Instead they just feel uncomfortable and unsure.    So that’s something I can remember.  It was a good lesson.

Don’t worry though, I still had the chance to learn more about the light on Saturday during a three-hour lighting session taught by the current Professional Photographers of America president, Louis Tonsmeire.

Phoenix Family Photographer | Zeke and Ruthie

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is capturing an expression that really is the subject.  It’s easy for us to put on our picture faces, but most of the time those faces aren’t the ones our loved ones recognize as really us.  And with kids, wow, it can either be really easy or really difficult depending on how many times they’ve heard “Say Cheese!”

Zeke is one of those kids that loves to mug for the camera.  At this shoot in 2009, we captured some great shots that were just quintessentially him–pouts and grins.  It makes it really difficult to edit down a shoot when I know I’ve really captured someone.  So here are a few of Zeke and Ruthie, circa November 2009.

Phoenix NICU Photographer | Evie

It is hard when you’re pregnant to think about something going wrong.  In the Western world, people don’t talk about sick babies and infant loss, especially not to someone expecting a baby.  At least if they have any home training, that is.  But the truth is that sometimes it doesn’t all happen the way you imagine as you write your birth plan.  It doesn’t make it any less beautiful though.

I should know.  I’m a NICU mom.  Being a NICU mom is one of the top three events that define the way I view the world.  It is a huge part of why each infant I photograph is truly a cherished miracle.  My oldest son, Zeke, was born at 29 weeks gestation–three-quarters baked as I often joke now that he’s healthy and indistinguishable from his full-term peers.  The first two months of his life he lived at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  I clutched a grainy photograph of my wired and tubed baby as proof that I was a mom and to show people my amazing little man.

Because of this, I tell my moms at their maternity shoots that I hope and pray they don’t need a NICU.  But if they do, call me.  It may not seem like a moment you want to remember.  At the time it happens, you might be wishing to have a wireless baby and to have it all not be so scary.  But if you’re like me, as you grow out of the panic many days, weeks, or months down the road, you’ll want to remember how it really was.  You’ll want to see how far your sweet baby has come.  You’ll want your family and friends to know, too.  That’s where I come in.  Since you’ve already booked a newborn shoot, we’ll reschedule that shoot with all the props and fun when your baby is healthy.  In the mean time as one NICU mom to another I would be honored to give you the gift of a complementary NICU session.

And that’s what’s next.  I’ve put it after the jump in case there is a pregnant woman reading this that just doesn’t want to go there in her mind.  I get that.  It can be heart wrenching if you haven’t seen a wired baby before.  But there is so much beauty there too, in these little miracles and their will to survive and thrive.  So after the jump, Miss Evie, not even 1 full day old.  She made it to a full-term pregnancy, but there were complications at delivery that sent her to the NICU.  Miss Evie is the picture of health now.  I only share three NICU images with her parents’ permission to let you know I’ll be there for you too, God forbid you need me.

Phoenix newborn photographer | Baby Ruth

I’ve been shooting for over 3 years now without a blog for my photography.  So I’ve decided to go through my archives and post some favorites.  Sweet baby Ruth is one of my all-time favorite baby girls.  I can get away with saying that because she’s mine.  These were shot when she was 6 days old.  She’s 19 months old now, so they aren’t too far back in the archives.  But they still rank as some of my all-time favorites.  I don’t know if it is because I’m biased by the subject, but I’m willing to bet it is a huge part of it.
